2008 LA Auto Show: Bentley Azure T

Stylish and powerful, the new Bentley Azure T is the world's most elegant convertible and destined to become a future classic. With unique Bentley 'T' styling cues reinforcing its sporting stance, the 500bhp Azure T delivers driver-focused performance with the ability to transport four adults in first-class, open-top luxury. The new Azure T, specified with the high performance version of Crewe's iconic 6 litre V8 engine, is the latest in a line of Bentley models to bear the 'T' legend. The 1996 Continental coupe was the first modern Bentley 'T', followed in 2002 by the Arnage T, both flagship models with a distinctive sporting character and thunderous performance. The Azure's already striking form is now enhanced by 20-inch 5-spoke wheels and tyres, 'Le Mans' front wing vents, dark tint matrix grille and a sculpted, retractable Flying 'B' mascot. For the performance-oriented Azure T, the twin-turbocharged V8 engine produces 500bhp and 1000 Nm of torque an 11 per cent increase in power and a 14 per cent increase in torque over its 450bhp/875 Nm Azure stable mate. The famous Bentley wave of torque is even more prodigious than before and performance is significantly raised with a top speed of 179 mph (288 km/h) and a 0-60 mph time of just 5.2 seconds (0-100 km/h in 5.5 sec).  read more »

BMW Aims Being US Leading Luxury Stakes, Taking off Lexus

BMW, buoyed by a new line of small cars, threatens to end the 8-year reign of Toyota's Lexus as the leading US luxury brand.

BMW topped Lexus in July for the third time in 2008. BMW, the world's largest maker of luxury cars, trails Lexus by 3466 sales after 7 months, erasing 90% of the gap from the start of the year.

The US debut of the 1-Series car in March bolstered BMW's offerings with a model that gets 28 miles per gallon on the highway, blunting the effect of record gasoline prices that are sapping sales of big four-wheel-drives. Lexus has added only a sports car and a 4WD with 400 horsepower, V8 engines.  read more »

The sports car in your future

JCW.bmp I have driven the future and its here right now. Granted, oil prices are falling like a Hummer driven over a cliff, but consumers are still going to be keen on fuel economy for the foreseeable future. That being the case, what will sports car buffs drive if money is an object?  read more »

Rolls-Royce Considers an EV. No, Seriously...

Rollsroycephantom If the word out of Goodwood is true, Rolls-Royce owners won't have shut off their engines so you can hear them ask for Grey Poupon because they won't have engines, just blissfully silent electric motors. That's right. Rolls Royce, a marque second only to Hummer for being synonymous with conspicuous consumption, wants to go green. Company CEO Tom Purves says he'd like to build an electric version of the Phantom using pretty much the same technology BMW, which owns Rolls, is putting into the Mini EV it recently rolled out . The funny thing is, an electric Rolls makes a lot of sense. Think about it. Most Rolls-Royce owners don't do much more than tool around town, so range isn't an issue. The cars are built for comfort, not speed, so they don't need a lot of power. And with cities like London adopting gas-guzzler taxes , an electric Rolls could save owners some serious coin. "Many of our customers do small mileages exclusively in the city," company CEO Tom Purves told Britain's Car magazine . "For these customers, an electric Rolls-Royce would be ideal." He goes on to say, "I can imagine a time when city or state authorities may ban cars from towns that exceed a certain level of CO2. We may need an electric car merely to sell in certain parts of the world." Yeah, but c'mon an electric Rolls? Isn't that a sign of the apocalypse? Or at least a little too crunchy for the caviar-and-Champagne set? Purves sees nothing unusual about a Rolls with a cord. "We stand for unmatched refinement and you can't get a quieter and less intrusive engine than a well-engineered electric motor," he says. "Truly, the loudest noise you would hear would be the tick of the clock." He doesn't think building an e-Rolls would be much trouble or take much time. He figures the car could be built at the venerable Rolls factory in Goodwood, England, with technical help from the engineers in Munich working on the Mini-E. A motor, a controller and a big honkin' battery how tough could it be?  read more »
