Think of this column as a sign that a change is going to come. And while this is happening far from the firms in Munich, Stuttgart, Ingolstadt, etc., they will be the ones affected in the long run. The outcome of this will be a truly worldwide offering of some superlative cars as the outer limits are explored and developed.
A few months ago, I had lunch with a recently retired honcho who has a firm grip on German automotive reality and is still on the company payroll as a consultant. This is the usual manner of keeping the inner circle loyal and not allowing that knowledge to end up in a competitor's camp. As we walked out to the parking lot, I was surprised to see him getting into a new Lexus LS. "Hey, what are you doing in that POS?" was my comment. His reply was a revelation: "It's a great car and I don't have time to deal with any issues." read more »
It was tough to sit through the two Honda press conferences today. Both the redesigned Acura TSX and the Honda Fit have been stars on the Internet for seemingly months now. The Fit was introduced in Japan last fall where it is Honda's top-selling model. And various TSX pictures and the press release have been rattling around online for a while now. So the introductions here have been awkward. With very little adieu, out rolled each car. Loud music was playing...and kept playing...and just when you thought it was done, played some more. It was as if Honda was trying to build excitement in the press corps that never quite happened. read more »
It's time for Acura to get serious. I don't mean serious in a "no more fun" sense, I mean serious in a "We're committed to creating full-fledged premium cars, and not just really good Hondas" sense. That's what the 2009 Acura TSX feels like to me -- a really good Honda. That's great if you already love Hondas and just won the lottery, but if you're trying to bring non-Honda-philes into the fold, this car can't do it.
I drove the TSX on a variety of roads, including Mulholland Drive. read more »
We've known for quite some time now that the Acura NSX replacement would feature a V10 engine likely at the front of the vehicle and possibly powering all four wheels via a version of the brand's SH-AWD. Now that Nissan's amazing new GT-R has set a new standard for what a Japanese supercar can be, the next NSX had better be something impressive indeed, and rumors are that it will be just that.
What we still don't know is what this car will look like, so we're very interested in what Japanese car-buff-mag Best Car claims is a rendering of the new NSX. If this is an accurate portrayal, we're glad that Acura stylists found a way to leave off the big metal triangular grill that is plaguing the rest of its lineup, as it just doesn't seem befitting for a sportscar. Although the only rendering offered is an angled shot from the drivers-side front, this coupe still seems a little generic to our eyes, but at least looks better than what we saw from the Advanced Sports Car Concept last year in Detroit. Fans of Acura 's first generation NSX are going to have a tough time waiting until 2010 for the next version to bow, but we're sure to have an endless stream of spy shots and a perpetually overactive rumormill to keep us busy till then. read more »

For the first and only time in the history of Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) testing, an automobile nameplate has earned the prestigious TOP SAFETY PICK rating for every vehicle in its entire line-up. To accomplish this safety milestone, all 2009 Acura luxury sedans and SUVs received the highest possible rating in each IIHS crash test and feature the Acura Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) electronic stability control system as standard equipment. "TOP SAFETY PICK winners are the top performers in tough front, side, and rear crash tests, and they have electronic stability control, a crucial technology that can help drivers avoid many crashes altogether," says Institute president Adrian Lund. read more »
The Audi Q7 V12 TDI is set to launch , and its just the thing to give that annoying neighbor with his fancy VW Touareg V10 TDI a debilitating inferiority complex. 500 horsepower and approximately enough torque to counter-rotate the Earth (758 lb-ft) come standard on Audis diesel monster. 21-inch wheels mask carbon ceramic brakes, LED running lamps help light the way, and the interior is a festival of dead cow, TV screens, and Alcantara, all trimmed neatly in aluminum and carbon fiber. If we were, say, Russian gangsters, wed totally be driving one of these. In conjunction with the launch, Audi dumped a slew of new pictures on its media site, so here they are. read more »
Look at the 2008 Acura MDX and it's hard to believe that its been 21 years since Honda introduced its upscale Acura brand. It was 1986 when the full-size Legend and sporty Integra came on the scene, based on the award-winning Accord and Civic models, and it was quite a thing to see a Japanese manufacturer ready to throw down with the domestic and European big boys in the luxury game, crested wreaths and three-pointed stars in its crosshairs. Since then the company has grown, releasing sports cars good enough to compete with Ferraris along the way, and, since 2001, luxury crossovers that don't just compete but rather are market leaders in technological and ergonomic advancements...
The extremely cheap, extremely sketchy (putatively) NSX-engine-powered Acura Legend obliterated the dime-a-dozen turbo Civic in yesterday's Choose Your Eternity poll, which is about what we expected. So what if we could find not just an NSX engine but an entire car for cheap (well, maybe entire isn't the right word here, but you get the idea)- what then? Well, then we have quite a dilemma when trying to find something to stack up against the Acura, a car that's equally cool, in spittin' distance of the NSX's price range, and hideously expensive when it comes to part obtainment. Perhaps it's an impossible task, but let's see how things sort out in today's Detroit-versus-Japan matchup!
The '58 Lincoln put up a good showing, but in the end the Porsche 928 takes the prize, with 56% of you choosing Polyester-Clad White Powder Distributor over Chain-Smoking Rat Pack Player in Monday's Choose Your Eternity poll. read more »
