Buick Drops Invicta Concept Teaser Ahead Of Beijing Motor Show [Beijing Motor Show]

Buick is planning to unveil their new Invicta concept at the Beijing Motor Show on April 19th, calling it, "a premium vehicle with international appeal." It'll be an evolution of design concepts first introduced on last year's Riviera concept and could herald a new full-size luxury car from the ailing brand. Buick has found a level of popularity in China currently unthinkable on these shores. The full press release follows the jump.  read more »

2008 Buick Lucerne Super Is 2007 CXS with 17 More Horses And Priced At $39,395 [New Cars]

2008_Buick_Lucerne_Super.jpgWhen Buick's latest version of its big Lucerne sedan hits dealerships in April, it will no longer be called CXS but instead "Super," following in the footsteps of little brother LaCrosse, which received a similar designation last year. According to GM, the Lucerne Super will be priced just south of $40K. The main difference between the old CXS and the new Super is under the hood: the CXS Northstar V8 put out 275 hp, while the Super Northstar V8 does 292 hp. Of course, this is a little like... oh, I dunno, touting your 2005 Cabernet over the '04 because you're at 15 percent alcohol by volume, rather than 14.5. Then calling it "Special Reserve" instead of just "Reserve." Thus, Lucerne Super. But so what? More grousing and the GM press release, after the jump.  read more »

Pontiac Could Save GM

2009pontiacvibe Today, the Wall Street Journal ran a story stating that GM could shutter many of its brands, not just Hummer, which the company has already publicly said is up for sale or closure because of tough economic times. The only two safe brands, the article states, are Chevrolet and Cadillac. Buick, GMC, Pontiac, Saturn and Saab are all up for discussion, meaning sale or the chopping block. Its obviously too early to tell what will happen, but we can still speculate. GM is already consolidating Buick, GMC and Pontiac dealerships into single stores. Buick has a hit with its Enclave crossover, but the other two brands havent a single success to point at. Saab has had little investment by GM and is most likely after Hummer to go the way of the dodo by sale or shutter. Saturn has an all-new lineup, and GM has spent a massive amount of money relaunching the brand, but not much has taken hold. Only the Saturn Vue crossover has had much long-term success; the hybrid version has virtually sold out. Closing Saturn would be the biggest and hardest chop GM could make because of all that new investment. However, many of Saturns vehicles could head straight to Pontiac with a quick badge slap here and there. A smart move for GM might be keeping the Buick/GMC/Pontiac triplets and axing Hummer, Saab and Saturn. Follow me here a second: Buick could pick up the upcoming Saab 9-4x crossover, and a new sedan to replace the LaCrosse is already in the works. With a solid sedan, a midsize crossover and the hot three-row Enclave, Buick would be pretty well-rounded. If GM had to cut even more, I could also see it killing Buick entirely and moving the Enclave to Cadillac, as well as shutting down GMC, which has no unique vehicles.  Pontiac has sold quite a few G6 sedans and Vibe hatchbacks lately. The company needs to build on that success. A new G6 could be imported from Europe, like Saturn had planned for its next-generation Aura. The next Saturn Astra could also become a compact Pontiac two-door hatchback and sedan (so as not to overlap with the Vibe). The Saturn Vue is a sporty crossover that could be rebadged as a Pontiac, but a Chevy version is already planned. That would mean Pontiacs lineup would have a solid, sporty entry-level car in the Astra, plus the Vibe, a new G6 sedan and the powerful rear-wheel-drive G8, which might not sell well with high gas prices but would keep the performance aspect of the brand intact. Pontiac has already shown some creativity in advertising for the G8, has a lot of brand equity and a fan following. That leaves GMC. It would be pretty easy to dismiss the nameplate because it sells the same out-of-vogue pickups and SUVs as Chevy. In that regard, GM could go nuclear and kill GMC and Buick, leaving just Pontiac to pick up the pieces. GMC still sells a significant number, though, of those out-of-vogue SUVs and pickups, and it doesnt cost much to run the brand. However, even the costs associated with marketing and advertising might be case enough for GM to axe it, let alone the factory workers salaries. Just think, though: Pontiac may be the sole survivor in a massive bloodletting, besides the core or Chevy and Cadillac. Id rather GM wait to see how much really needs to go before any of these actions are taken, but most folks probably wouldnt miss a Hummer, Saab, Buick or GMC. What do you think? How many could or should survive?  read more »

DOTS '54 Ford Could Be Yours! [Found On Craigslist]

Dculberson was checking out the car deals on Craigslist when he came across a 1954 Ford that looked familiar yes, it's the DOTS 1954 Ford we saw almost a year ago, now equipped with grille and Carson top, not to mention a nice 302/5-speed combo. I've always liked this car, but the $9,000 price is a bit out of my personal Hell Project budget range, plus I'm still waiting for the owner to put his other car (which is easily one of my all-time DOTS favorites) up for sale. By the way, I've been seeing FOR SALE signs on the DOTS '71 Buick Le Sabre as well; looks like the tough economy has folks in Sell Mode.  read more »

Buick 3 models?

Is Buick to only have 3 models for a while?

Reading up on them, in 1960 their current emblem was born. Three shields represeting the three cars that they had for sale that year. Currently, they only have 3 shields. Is Buick going to start to hold true to its emblem?

Welcome To America, Land of the Skyhawk! [Retro]

My grandfather recently sent me some of his old rally and ice-racing photos, and I'll get around to scanning and posting them one of these weeks. But looking at those yellowing shots of Saab 93s and oval-window Beetles sliding around on frozen Lake Minnetonka got me to thinking about all those millions of family photographs out there showing interesting old cars from Back In The Day, and how maybe I should ask our readers to start sharing theirs... and, as if on cue, here comes this email from BZR, who has discovered some photos of his father's very first car. Yes, after arriving from China, the first-ever car BZR Sr. owned was a 10-year-old '76 Buick Skyhawk! Which, when you think about it, is as good an introduction to American culture as you're ever going to get from an automobile. Make the jump to read the whole story in BZR's own words.  read more »
