All we can tell so far is it's got similar badging to the more-mini Mini.  read more »

BMW Concept 1-Series tii to Make North American Debut in Chicago [Chicago Auto Show]

bmw_1series_tii.jpgIt debuted at the Tokyo motor show last October. Now, the BMW 1-Series concept that lit a magnesium fire in our naughty bits is coming to Chicago. Officially, it's the BMW Concept 1-Series tii; unofficially, it's several shades of Teutonic radness. Let me count the ways: It recalls the heady days of mid-period BMW road racing, evokes the original (E30) M3 and cribs its halo from the early '70s BMW 2002 tii.  read more »

2009 BMW 7-Series Thinks It's KITT, Has Human-Detecting Night Vision [2009 BMW 7-series]

Although we showed you the new 2009 BMW 7-Series in all of its unofficial glory on Thursday. Well, now we've got the official details from BMW, and we've included the full press release for the new 7-Series after the jump. Sure, focus all you want on the horsepower (407 HP in the 750i and 750Li, 326 HP in the 740i and 740Li) or the torque (600 Nm of torque in the 750i and 750Li, 450 Nm of torque in the 740i and 740Li) or even the 155 MPH electronically-limited top speed, but the one thing that's sticking out in our minds is the new "individual pedestrian recognition" night vision system.  read more »

BMW Aims Being US Leading Luxury Stakes, Taking off Lexus

BMW, buoyed by a new line of small cars, threatens to end the 8-year reign of Toyota's Lexus as the leading US luxury brand.

BMW topped Lexus in July for the third time in 2008. BMW, the world's largest maker of luxury cars, trails Lexus by 3466 sales after 7 months, erasing 90% of the gap from the start of the year.

The US debut of the 1-Series car in March bolstered BMW's offerings with a model that gets 28 miles per gallon on the highway, blunting the effect of record gasoline prices that are sapping sales of big four-wheel-drives. Lexus has added only a sports car and a 4WD with 400 horsepower, V8 engines.  read more »

BMW 507 [Jalopnik Fantasy Garage]

front1507.jpgYou know who we don't spend enough time talking about? Max Hoffman. Max Hoffman? Yeah buddy, Max Hoffman. Those of you with steel trap memories will remember that Hoffman was the guy who convinced Mercedes-Benz to build and import the 300 SL, a car we all agree is six degrees of triple-rad. Hoffman also had Frank Lloyd Wright design him both a home and a Jaguar dealership in Manhattan and he's responsible for bringing the Porsche 356 Speedster to American soil. The BMW 507, too. What a guy.  read more »

2010 Audi TT RS Head For Geneva 2009 Debut

Five-cylinder engines have long been an Audi trademark. First used in 1977 in the Audi 100/5000, five-cylinders took Audi upmarket and clearly differentiated the brand from the competition. The Audi 200 Turbo, with its 170-hp inline-five, became the world's fastest four-door in 1984; the 315-hp, Audi 80based RS2 Avant of the mid-90s was the most extreme station wagon of its time; and Audi won several rally championships with the five-banger Quattrothe S1 Pikes Peak had almost 600 hp. In the mid-90s, Audi dropped the five-cylinder engine and its characteristic, subdued growl in favor of more conventional four-cylinder and V-6 engines. Brand aficionados howled in futile protest, and engineering guru Ferdinand Pich, who had developed the five-cylinder engine but later moved on to become head of VW, said he never quite understood why the engine had been dropped. Its Back!  read more »

Audi Going Electric To "Offer Cars Without Exhaust Emissions"

Audi_rzero Add Audi to the list of automakers who plan to add an electric vehicle to their lineup. The German automaker's top executive says Audi sees tremendous opportunities for electric vehicles and will roll one out within 5 to 10 years, promising "by then we will offer cars without exhaust emissions." "Electric cars offer great opportunities, which we have already seized on," Chairman Rupert Stadler said in an interview with German magazine Welt am Sonntag . According to a Google translation of the interview, Audi is devoting a tremendous level of resources to the project. " Our research capacity within the group is larger than many competitors," Stadler said. Audi has bet heavily on clean diesel technology being an effective way to improve fuel economy without sacrificing performance - its gorgeous R8 TDI concept car offers 500 horsepower and a stump-pulling 737 pound-feet of torque, and the R10 diesel racer has dominated Le Mans. But Stadler says he expects electric drive trains to join diesels in dominating the market within a decade - particularly in urban areas. So what would an electric Audi look like?  read more »

Land Rover Defender [Jalopnik Fantasy Garage]

Land%20Rover%20Defender.jpgLast week saw a heated debate over the entry of the 1925 Rolls-Royce Phantom 1 Jonckheere Coupe. Was it beautiful or a mockery, art or excess, folly or fantastic? According to the votes, 80.3% of you believed it a worthy entrant, so those questions have an answer. Now we switch gears entirely, from a tribute to form to a celebration of unquestionable function. In modern history, Land Rover has been nothing if not there to see things happen. It is said that a Land Rover is the only vehicle some people will ever see. Beginning in post-war Britain in 1946, an unbroken chain of workhorse machines has performed the duties set forth by their owners, never rusting, rarely failing. That progression has left us with a paragon of uncomplaining, uncomplicated virtue: the Land Rover Defender.  read more »

2008 BMW 1 Series Review

Few brands have grown more than BMW in the past 25 years. That growth can be seen in their sales figures and the vehicles themselves. Today's 335i is larger than 1986's 535i, for instance, and it certainly sells in much greater volumes. This trend toward bigger and heavier has altered the brand's lineup to the point that there's now room for a cheaper, smaller entry-level car. Stepping boldly into the gap is the 2008 BMW 1 Series .  read more »
