2008 Philadelphia International Auto Show Coverage

Black Tie Gala, Food, Booze, The New Audi A4 and Miss America After a very long week in the office, I was looking forward to a relaxing Friday night with my girlfriend. I had been talking to a few of my co-workers and one of them mentioned they were going to the Philadelphia Auto Show's Black Tie Gala event that evening. Having lived in the area for the last couple of years, it was something I always wanted to do. The reason I hadn't gone in the past is because the price tag for the event was rather steep - $200 for the evening. Seemingly every year the price had gone up, and for whatever reason I just dealt with general admission to the venue. Over the past few years I'd grown weary of car shows being mobbed by people to the point where you really couldn't get a good look at anything for more than a few seconds, as people would shuffle you out of the way for their 10 second chance to glimpse an exotic auto. Taking a picture was impossible as well, because even if you had enough space to take one someone would walk into your path. This brings me to another point: anything really worth looking at is completely roped off from the general public. I left the office that day and I told my co-worker to let me know how the event west, as I had explained to him (and now to you) my gripes with past auto shows. On the way home I was enjoying the fact that the week was over and looking forward to my vacation the following week. I then received a text message from my girlfriend and based on an unforeseen family obligation my Friday night suddenly freed up completely. As luck would have it I was still able to get my hands on a last minute ticket, so I drove home to get suited up for a fun night ahead. Not wanting to leave my S4 at the mercy of the local parking lot attendants I wisely took the train to the Philadelphia convention center. I also didn't realize the event would also include an open bar for the night. In retrospect it was quite fortunate that I took the train. I arrived at the event and I was one of the first few people in the door at 7pm on the dot. I figured that the allotted four hours would provide plenty of opportunity to see everything.  read more »

Mercedes SLR McLaren 722S Roadster

When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the convertible version of its very rare SLR McLaren 722 S Coupe late last month, all it had for us were ethereal renderings of what the car would look like. This week the German automaker has given unto us a gallery's worth of high-res photography showing what is likely to become the world's fastest convertible.  read more »

2008 Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged Road Test

Theres a saying among the rich and famous that goes, if youve made it big in life you should get yourself a Porsche 911 Turbo to satisfy your childhood dreams, a Mercedes Benz S-Class so that you can be driven around by a chauffeur (with a British accent, no less), a Bentley Continental GT for devouring up the miles in cross-country journeys when work becomes too much of a chore, and a Range Rover if youve always wanted to own a proper truck (or to tow the requisite Sea Ray Sport Yacht). Dont get me wrong, sir (or maam), as your lifted Toyota Tacoma monster truck certainly more than qualifies as a proper truck, but can you really pull up to the Ritz-Carlton in that...

A Garage Fit For a King: The Best Of The Sultan Of Brunei's Amazing Car Collection [Sultan Of Brunei]

Ferrari wagon-izations and hypercars bathed in magnetizing yellow are just a couple hints the Sultan of Brunei is perhaps the most Jalopnik head of state in the whole world. Like us, he seems to have a maddening obsession with odd cars. However, what sets him apart is his seemingly unending pot of money with which to manifest his wildest automotive fantasies.  read more »

I need to get a camera phone...

This afternoon in Houston, I saw:

1) Porsche GT3 RS
2) Ferrari F430
3) Mercedes SLR
4) Bentley Continental GT
5) Mercedes SL65
6) Aston Martin DB9
(I didn't even bother posting anything under $150k)

First time to see an SLR in person. I thought it was ugly, mainly due to the proportions.

PCH, Beelzebub's Benz Edition: '58 219 or '73 450SL? [Choose Your Eternity]

The '88 Bentley Mulsanne had its entourage of coked-up thugs stuff the MGC into The Crusher in Friday's Choose Your Eternity poll , with nearly 65% of voters preferring Bentley Hell to MG Hell. With all the British, Italian, and French machinery we've seen in this series recently, we tend to forget that the Germans are no slouches at providing us with Hell Projects. Oh, sure, the Germans do a pretty good job with engineering and quality control (and British Leyland-style labor strife was never a factor, what with the stern Prussian overseers brandishing their riding crops at the assembly line workers), but complexity is dear to the heart of any self-respecting German engineer, and complex cars have complex problems! That's why we're taking a little trip to German Car Hell today, with a pair of vintage Mercedes-Benzes featuring budget price tags. Everyone liked the Ponton Mercedes-Benz we had on DOTS not long ago, so I've been keeping an eye out for an affordable one. Now, let's say- just for the sake of argument- that you could find a Ponton for $500. Would you do what Team Field Find did with their Mercedes Fintail? Get ready for exactly that dilemma, because here's a 1958 Mercedes-Benz 219 (go here if the ad disappears) for exactly five Benjamins! You can't expect a W105 Mercedes at that price to be perfect, so it doesn't come as much of a shock to find that this one doesn't run. However, the seller states that it "has motor use to run," which should be reassuring. Looks like the interior needs some work, too, and some trim pieces have gone AWOL. The thing about this car that serves as such an effective lure to the sulfurous abyss is that it's so solidly built that you know it's possible to make everything work again. You can do it! It would be fun to feel like the decadent Baron von Hoon in your staid Ponton, heading out for a night of Early Jet Set Era absinthe-fueled cross-dressing action at an exclusive Berlin nightclub, but perhaps you like your Mercedes-Benzes to be more on the sporty side. We've got just what you need, Jrgen! How about a 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL (go here if the ad disappears) for only $750?  read more »

And the Greenest Car in America is ...

Quick, name the greenest car in America. The Toyota Prius, right? Wrong! The most environmentally friendly car sold in America is the Honda Civic GX. Yep, Honda's compressed natural gas sedan edges out the mighty Prius for the title, according...

2008 Maserati GT Review

07-gt-f3q-s.jpgThanks to modern speed enforcement, the idea of leaping large continents in a hugely fast, spectacularly comfortable car has become something of a quaint notion. And yet, upscale manufacturers still compete to build the ultimate GT (Gran Turismo). Reflecting the concept’s European origins, the short list of candidates for this honor all originate on the other side of the pond: the Mercedes CL63, Bentley Continental GT, Aston Martin DB9, BMW 650, Jaguar XKR and the Maserati GT. Having owned or reviewed all but the new Maserati, I decided to see if the mad Italian has what it takes to trump its continental cousins.
