Black Tie Gala, Food, Booze, The New Audi A4 and Miss America After a very long week in the office, I was looking forward to a relaxing Friday night with my girlfriend. I had been talking to a few of my co-workers and one of them mentioned they were going to the Philadelphia Auto Show's Black Tie Gala event that evening. Having lived in the area for the last couple of years, it was something I always wanted to do. The reason I hadn't gone in the past is because the price tag for the event was rather steep - $200 for the evening. Seemingly every year the price had gone up, and for whatever reason I just dealt with general admission to the venue. Over the past few years I'd grown weary of car shows being mobbed by people to the point where you really couldn't get a good look at anything for more than a few seconds, as people would shuffle you out of the way for their 10 second chance to glimpse an exotic auto. Taking a picture was impossible as well, because even if you had enough space to take one someone would walk into your path. This brings me to another point: anything really worth looking at is completely roped off from the general public. I left the office that day and I told my co-worker to let me know how the event west, as I had explained to him (and now to you) my gripes with past auto shows. On the way home I was enjoying the fact that the week was over and looking forward to my vacation the following week. I then received a text message from my girlfriend and based on an unforeseen family obligation my Friday night suddenly freed up completely. As luck would have it I was still able to get my hands on a last minute ticket, so I drove home to get suited up for a fun night ahead. Not wanting to leave my S4 at the mercy of the local parking lot attendants I wisely took the train to the Philadelphia convention center. I also didn't realize the event would also include an open bar for the night. In retrospect it was quite fortunate that I took the train. I arrived at the event and I was one of the first few people in the door at 7pm on the dot. I figured that the allotted four hours would provide plenty of opportunity to see everything. read more »

Getting audiophile sound out of your car often means a trip to a stereo shop, where some kid with no musical taste fills your ride with gear that strains your alternator, drains your wallet and invariably sound better in the showroom than behind the wheel. Automakers have figured out there's a lot of money to be made offering truly high-end audiophile stereos and are starting to respond. Lacking the expertise to do it themselves, many are enlisting some of the biggest names in home audio to turn their vehicles in to rolling concert halls. read more »
History loves its heroes and usually forgets its failures, other thann as answers to trivia questions. Consider the current Volkswagen Passat. Its ancestor hit these shores as the Dasher in 1974 and I can attest to its weirdness. I worked at a VW dealer at the time and my daily ride was an early Cal Look, big-motor Split Window; it had eight-spokes (not BRMs, which would have been cooler), but my Bug was super-quick.
Into the mix came this odd-looking front-drive mess that needed water to run correctly. We didn't understand or care about what VW had to do about its future. For us, it was all air-cooled, all the time. Water was for the other suckers. The sister Porsche Audi dealers already had their hands full of defective Audi 100 models and many of us in the parts and service departments were expecting trouble with the Dasher. It didn't disappoint. read more »
Given the enthusiastic response to its Audi R8 V12 TDI concept (pictured above right), not to mention its diesel-powered dominance of prototype endurance racing in the Le Mans and American Le Mans series, it hardly comes as a surprise to...

The Super Bowl is the premier place to debut commercials that can help make or break a car company. One of the big players every year is the automotive industry and Super Bowl XLII was no different. KickingTires David Thomas and Cars.com managing editor Patrick Olsen go over the winners and losers. And no, were not reviewing Cars.coms two spots. The ads are listed in order of their airing. 2008 Audi R8David Thomas: WinnerTaking on the Godfather is the appropriate way to deliver the message that Audi wants to play in the $100,000+ luxury market, which its new R8 certainly does. Of course, it doesnt really replace a Bentley or a Rolls like we saw in the bed, but the ad was extremely well done and the R8 blasting down the drive was sure to win over any car guy. read more »
Although the Chinese call 2008 the year of the dog, we consider it more ' The Year of the Euro.' Of the last 10 significant new car launches, eight have been European models.
